Victory over sexual addictive behaviors must derive from a change in attitude of one’s mind and heart. This changed attitude only comes from an unconditional surrender to God. It is a decision to stop turning to the sexual act and rely upon the provisions of a Power Greater than self. The new attitude will be in place before the addict is tempted and when hit with the image, the fantasy, thought or feeling, the Presence of God will provide the way out.
What the sex addict seeks in the sexual act must now be found in the God of his/her understanding. Victory over the addiction is not found within the Addict or even in what he/she does but rather in the prior disposition of the addict’s heart toward God. The is where the addict is either saved from it or not.
Victory over the addiction is a daily decision to give up the fantasy, image, thought to God. Deliverance comes as a consequence of that daily decision: “I surrender my right to drink and ask Him to keep me sober from every desire to actout sexually.” Addicts can have total victory over the addiction before the temptation ever begins. Victory is in one’s prior attitude, an attitude that comes from unconditional surrender to God. A prior disposition of the heart. The addict either has it or doesn’t. There is not in-between. “Half measures availed us nothing!” Thus, the victory over the addiction comes only from a total surrender to God.
