Around 6 million men in America suffer from depression, so it is important for men to share if they are feeling depression but often men associate seeking help with weakness.
What makes depression in men so dangerous? It too often goes unrecognized and untreated because it is masked by physical complaints, substance abuse, anger and other stealth symptoms. Undiagnosed depression is the leading cause of suicide. Men are four times more likely to die by suicide than women.
Signs of male depression is different than female depression. It is often hidden under anger and being irritable. There are also low energy and difficulty in concentration. Depression in males often leads to interruption of every day responsibilities, which can create a feeling of worthless and shame. Some depressed men will have physical signs, such as an upset stomach, headache, erectile dysfunction and back pains.
If you think that you could be struggling with male depression, then we (Front Range Counseling Center) strongly encourage you to get help. The first important step towards your recovery is to acknowledge what you’re experiencing. We have Depression counselors that can help you work through the depression and setup a treatment plan that may include individual therapy, group counseling, and/or medication.
