Powerful Habits Counselors DenverTaking Care Of Self in Recovery

One way to take care of yourself is to take time to relax and rest the body, mind, and spirit.  Many people don’t take time to relax or rest because they feel like they’d be a disappointment to someone else (i.e., boss, spouse, family, or friends).  This probably comes from a desire to please others and results in neglecting to take care of oneself.  If you don’t take care of yourself, you can end up with anger issues, depression, fatigue, and eventually to a potential breakdown.

Self-Care Recovery

How long can you continue to take care of other people without taking care of yourself?  Hows often do you feel you give more of yourself than you get in return?  Do you ever develop a resentment that the people you are helping don’t seem to give you the appreciation you deserve?  How often do you run out of time for yourself because you were too busy taking care of other people?  Helping other people is a good thing to do but not at the expense of sacrificing your own mental or physical health.  You deserve to take care of yourself and that doesn’t mean you are being selfish but rather wise.

Self Care Ideas

Some ideas of taking care of yourself:

  1. Do one nice thing for yourself that you have been putting off because you have been too busy.
  2. Set a plan for exercising during the week.  This can be just a few hours per week (walking, running, gym, etc.).
  3. Prepare your favorite meal or go out to your favorite restaurant.
  4. Take a day off from work and go somewhere beautiful (i.e., mountains, park, ocean, museum, etc.)
  5. Take time to take care of your own needs such as dentist, doctor’s visit, shopping, etc.
