For many sex addicts, their acting out focused mainly upon images within printed materials (i.e., magazines, internet, newspapers, etc.). Simply seeing an image of a woman, man, or scene can trigger the sex addict into objectifying other people and fall into a relapse of sexual fantasizes. The images don’t necessarily need to be sexual in nature or derive from pornographic magazines or websites. Everyday magazines or websites are enough for the sex addict to sexualize.
Therefore, the recovering sex addict will need to establish boundaries around all printed materials that may be used for lusting. We encourage you to be honest about what needs to be included on this boundary list. If you have any doubt about certain print materials (magazines, news papers, websites, etc.), put it on your list and review it with your therapist, group, sponsor, and spouse. It is better to be safe than sorry. You can always remove it later as you progress in your recovery.
