Common areas that Child Therapy can help:
FRCC has adopted the effective technique of Play Therapy to better reach children with behavioral or family difficulties. This form of therapy is particularly useful to reach children who do not respond well to "talk" therapy. Both our Littleton and Denver child counseling centers house a special Play Therapy room. It is equipped with toys that entice children to interact and work through their troubles, using the toys as an outlet.
Reaching a child on a comfortable level is an important step to getting to the root of the problem. A distressed child works through his or her troubles using play as a natural processing method. While the child plays freely he or she is monitored by a therapist watching for the signs that signal an opportunity to uncover the child's feelings without the pressure of interrogation. An example would be watching the child act out a scenario that has affected his or her life using dolls to represent the people involved. This provides an invaluable opportunity for the therapist to interact with the child.
This widely accepted form of therapy allows children to cope with problematic life situations while learning to express their feelings in a safe environment. Play therapy can be beneficial for treating a wide array of problems from stressful environmental situations to disciplinary problems. For children to fully benefit from this type of therapy, it is important that they are able to interact meaningfully with a therapist and are somewhat verbal.
